Ride styles for all

We organise a wide variety of regular, free group bike rides which range from family-friendly outings designed to build bike confidence across all ages, to more challenging cycling adventures further afield. See what’s coming up on our ride calendar and book your space here.

More info below on our different ride styles and, further down, what you can expect on our rides.

Our variety of rides

  • FAMILY-FRIENDLY / CONFIDENCE-BOOSTING EASY RIDES: Since summer 2023 we’ve been running family-friendly rides every 2-3 months, enabling hundreds of people of all abilities and ages to join in the fun and discover new routes. Our next event is Sunday 21 September – sign up for your free place here.
  • LOCAL SUNDAY RIDES (aka Bread Pudding Rides) usually start at 10.30am in Kingston Market Place unless stated otherwise, and we usually finish around 4/5pm. They are ‘leisure for pleasure’ rides – about 30 miles long – and not training sessions. We often use bridleways and towpaths, and try to avoid busy roads, so hybrid, gravel, or touring bikes are best.
  • MIDWEEK RIDES, similar to local rides, start from the Market Place at 10.30am unless stated otherwise. We do these once a month, usually on a Wednesday.
  • CHALLENGE RIDES start at 10am, may have a faster pace, regularly include hillier terrain, often are +40 miles, and sometimes have an alternative meeting point.
  • TWO-PART RIDES are two separate rides, both starting at the Market Place. Part 1 (starting at 10.30am) includes a lunch stop, then returns to Kingston. Part 2 (starting around 2pm) follows a different route and has a tea stop. And you can also have a slice of John’s famous bread pudding!
  • EVENING RIDES are shortest, starting from the market place at 7.30pm, with a pub stop, returning to Kingston by 10.30pm. Only 10-15 miles but don’t forget your lights!

Be ready to ride

Our social rides are fun but there are a few things we ask participants to keep in mind before joining us:

Before the ride

  • BIKE STYLES: Hybrid or touring bikes are ideal for our rides. You can bring a mountain bike but you’ll work harder on tarmac. If you bring a thin-tyred racing bike you need good bike handling skills, as we use bridleways and towpaths, which can be muddy, particularly in Winter.
  • AGE CHECK: Children, accompanied by a responsible adult, are welcome, particularly on the shorter half-day rides. However we cannot accept unaccompanied under 18s on our rides. Vulnerable adults will also need to be accompanied, as per the LCC Safeguarding policy.
  • RULES OF THE ROAD: Each participant is expected to abide by the Highway Code, as well as the Road Traffic Act 1988 – this obviously includes stopping at red lights
  • STAY SAFE: Each participant is wholly responsible for their own safety, the roadworthiness of their bike (some pre ride advice here), and any insurance(s) the individual feels necessary. Remember that LCC members are protected by 3rd party liability insurance (more info here)
  • BOOK YOUR PLACE: All rides will need to be booked in advance via LCC’s booking system & events page – https://lcc.org.uk/events-calendar/ .
  • BE PREPARED: Always bring a spare inner tube and remember lights for all evening and winter rides

During the ride

  • FOLLOW THE LEADER: Follow instructions from the ride leader / marshals or you might get lost!
  • RIDE RESPONSIBLY: We ride individually not as a unit so participants must check the road for themselves as though they were riding alone. Don’t rely on the ride leader/marshals to think for you.
  • COMMUNICATE: Advise the ride leader of any medical conditions that might be important if you have an accident, and let them know if you’re leaving the ride early (so we don’t end up searching for you!)
  • HAVE FUN: Remember our ride leader and marshals are all unpaid volunteers. So smile and enjoy the ride!
