Route planning

Wherever you’re heading, use the recommended tools below to help you get there safely. And, if you’re looking for local inspiration, we’ve added a few Kingston-wide routes below too.

How to plan a safe cycle route

  • To help plan a route you can try the CycleStreets journey planner, the Cycle.Travel app or the TfL Journey Planner remembering to select your preference for cycling. SUSTRANS has also mapped the Local Routes on the National Cycle Network
  • TfL also has a map here to help you find open and proposed cycle routes, as well as Santander Cycle docking stations across London.
  • A London Cycling Campaign volunteer also created this ‘safe cycling in London’ map, identifying whether or not these TfL cycle routes are actually protected cycle tracks, or go through LTNs, with routes through parks etc marked yellow as they are less likely to be suitable after dark.
  • More info on finding your perfect cycle route here, on the London Cycling Campaign website. This page includes online maps, recommended routing apps, plus some insightful videos showcasing safe routes around London.
  • If you’d like a personalised local route plan or help plotting and practising a bike-friendly route to school, work or anywhere else, you can also get in touch with us or sign up to our Cycle Buddies scheme. This free service connects new and experienced cyclists in the same area to help build confidence and introduce residents to new routes.

Local routes to expand your horizon

Back in 2015* Kingston Cycling Campaign developed this free ‘Get Cycling‘ booklet to encourage residents to explore the borough, using traffic-free and quiet cycle routes.

These seven route maps will help you find your way in and around Kingston – simply download the PDF and get exploring! There is also an additional route here, showcasing the Beeline Way.

Family-friendly routes for all

Since 2023 we’ve been running regular confidence-boosting rides designed with all ages and abilities in mind. Find out about upcoming family-friendly rides and follow our previous routes – full info and route maps here.

* Note that some routes might have changed slightly since.
