Construction of Kingston’s two new Cycleways continues…

Ewell Road (Cycleway 29)

When this Cycleway is finished, it create a safer cycle route from Tolworth all the way to Kingston Station. The route will be be made up of mostly separated cycle tracks along the 2.5 mile route.

Since construction finished at Elgar and Princes Avenue junction, the building crews have moved to the junction of Ewell Road with Kingsdowne & Ditton Road. This is one of the most complicated junctions on the Cycleway and it will take a number of months for construction to complete . However, once it has been completed, cyclists will be mostly separated from motor traffic as they cross the junction with separate cycle signals for people on bikes heading towards Surbiton.

Recent work included switching on new traffic signals at the reworked Elgar Avenue/Princes Avenue and Ewell Road junction. The new signals provide both people walking and people cycling with safe crossings over both Elgar and Princes Avenue. We are delighted that Kingston Council listened to our feedback to improve this junction after works completed several years ago did not make it safe enough for people walking and cycling.

Work on the Kingston to New Malden Cycleway also continues with work recently taking place near Aldi and Matalan close to where the route currently ends if you were travelling towards Kingston.

Kingston Road/Cambridge Road (Cycleway 32)

We understand works at the Hawk’s Road/Cambridge Road junction have been delayed until 2027 but, after finishing near Aldi, construction will move towards the Gloucester Road area with works continuing there towards the Cambridge Road Estate for the rest of the year.

When works finish, people on bikes will have a much safer route from New Malden to Kingston Town Centre (and vice-versa!). We think more needs to be done on certain aspects of the route though, including better connections with the Cambridge Road Estate which is currently being redeveloped.
